The first time my kid visits the dentist at the age of 3, he entered the door of the dentist’s office, saw the dental chair and equipments and booked right out, declaring that he is not going back there again. We ended up with him watching me have my teeth cleaned and I wished I have more tools in hand to prepare him. If only I have discovered the Healthy Smiles Series earlier.
This series of books is extremely educational and interesting and cover many areas on kid’s dental care, starting with the protagonist, Timmy’s first visit to the dentist at three years old. The language used is simple and clear and the choice of wordings and images make vising a dentist a totally pleasant adventure and motivates the child to take care of their own dental health.
The things in a dentist office are given an introduction that makes them interesting and magical rather than intimidating. The chair the kid lie on to get the teeth checked is called the “magic chair” And the tool which kids usually find uncomfortable in having in their mouth is called a “super duper air and water gun”
Images of bugs partying in the mouth and calling fluoride “superman syrup” makes kids want to use them to stop the bugs by brushing their teeth.
About the Healthy Smiles Series.
I was given the series of books by the author, Dr Lim Swee Teck during an extremely enlightening and interesting interview at his clinic. Dr Lim is also known as Dr Friendly with his child patients and their parents and is among the first pediatric dentists in Singapore. Check out Dr Lim’s
The contents of the books are developed as he created unique ways to communicate with children to help them overcome their fears on dental care and procedures. So it’s tried and tested. And it shows in how attractive the books and the use of words and descriptions are with a child.
My eight year old quickly discovered the books even before I got to check them out. He got through three books on his first day and told me “Mum, I got to read more, I got to learn more about taking care of my teeth.” I was not expecting that as my boy normally just rush through his dental routine and do not read that much. It’s been more than two weeks and the books are still his bedtime reading books of choice.
