Just 2 hours and 25 mins from Singapore, Desaru is a popular family friendly destination for a short get away out of Singapore with kids. A resort that have plenty of activities of kids make it an easy choice for a one or two night stay. Activities like a visit to the ostrich farm and watching fire flies make it a unique experience for city kids.
One unexpected place with pretty good food is the ostrich farm, which serves ostrich meat and eggs, but more of that later. This is where kids and adults can catch a glimpse of what ostrich farming is like , get up close to these big birds and learn something about them.
We had quite an educational experience visiting the ostrich farm. The wooden farm house has a day old ostrich at its entrance on the day we arrive and our lil boy is totally captivated.
The people at the entrance check if we wanted a tour at 15 RM for adults and 10 Rm for kids. When we shown inside where the guides talked knowledgeably on how the rear ostrich and share informative titbits on the uses of ostrich and their eggs which include making leather bags, lamps and medicine and oil. We get to try out how strong an ostrich egg is by standing on it. The guides speak in Mandarin and Malay
For 20 RM kids can try riding on the ostrich and take a picture with certificate as a souvenir and for RM 2 you get a bundle of grass to feed the ostrich. It’s fascinating stuff.
After the talk the kids walk around looking at the ostrich and feeding them, touching their feathers and hide. Most of the ostrich have some feathers plucked, apparently when they fight with one another.
After the visit, you can check out the souvenir shop and try out ostrich steak, satay and omelette. Ostrich meat is close to red meat but more tender and tasty.

Watching Fire Flies
Another highlight of our trip is watching fire flies at Restoran Terapung Bujang Firefly.
This place is about 20 min from Lotus Desaru Resort. It is a floating restaurant and room for rent as well but we were only there for the river cruise. Tickets cost RM20 for adult and RM15 for children. The boatman did not give much explanation but it was near full moon and there were quite a lot of fireflies that night and the night air was cool as it had just rained. Our boy was mesmerised when he managed to “catch” a fire fly that flew into his hand before letting it go.

Lotus Desaru Beach Resort
The buildings and rooms feels more apartment/chalet like rather than a hotel room. Mummy did not start out being too warm with the room but the kid love it. It’s really a studio apartment with the bedroom on the upper deck and a living area complete with a refrigerator, microwave, second wash room, on the lower deck. There is also a balcony so there is plenty of space for hide and seek and running up and down the stairs within the room itself.
The real highlight is a mini water park in the hotel itself complete with a water playground and a lazy river. Our room comes with 2 tickets to the water park so bigger families may need to purchase extra tickets.
There is also a couple of swimming pools, a huge gift store with lots of novelty and beach toys for the kids as well as a long stretch of beach.
The place light up at night and transforms to a carnival with led lights, group dancing, crafts and carnival games to keep everyone occupied.
There seems to be plenty to do at the craft area for younger kids too, which is handy for keeping the younger ones occupied so the adults can join the festivities too.
The breakfast is okay but nothing spectacular and we prefer to drive out for food. The resort have lots of activities and if you do not drive, you can always arrange for tours to the farms and fire flies tours.
